Why CostDog

AI coding is powerful. AI costs are invisible.

CostDog fixes that in seconds.

Problem

Dark Spend

AI assistants charge per token, but there's no dashboard to see it in real time. Dollars tick invisibly.

Solution

Instant Visibility

Auto-scans your existing Claude Code and Codex logs. Zero setup. Install and see everything in seconds.

Problem

No Visibility

Costs scattered across Claude Code, Codex, and other tools. No single view. No way to compare.

Solution

Single Dashboard

All your AI tools in one view. Token-level granularity broken down by model, project, and session.

Problem

Bill Shock

You discover your AI spend only when the monthly bill arrives. No alerts. No budgets. No control.

Solution

Smart Alerts

Set daily cost thresholds. Get warned before you blow your budget. All data stays on your machine.

Real-Time Cost Tracking

See every token and every dollar as it happens. No waiting for billing dashboards. No surprises at month-end.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about CostDog.

What AI tools does CostDog support?

Claude Code and Codex CLI today. Support for more tools (Windsurf, Cursor, Aider) and direct API tracking is on the roadmap.

Is my data sent to the cloud?

No. CostDog runs entirely on your machine. Data is stored in a local SQLite file at ~/.costdog/costdog.sqlite. Nothing leaves your network.

How does CostDog get my token usage?

It reads the session log files that Claude Code and Codex already write to your disk. No SDK, no API keys, no configuration needed.

Is CostDog free?

Yes. The core product is free and open-source under the MIT license. A Pro plan with team features and API access is planned.

Does it work on Apple Silicon?

Yes. Universal binary for macOS (Intel + Apple Silicon, ~15MB). Also available for Windows x64 (~5MB EXE, ~7MB MSI).

How accurate is the cost calculation?

We use real-time pricing from OpenRouter, covering 339+ models including Claude, GPT, Gemini, DeepSeek, and more. Prices are cached locally and refreshed every 24 hours.

Can I use it in a team?

Team dashboards are planned for the Pro version. Each developer can use the free version individually today.

Does it affect my AI assistant's performance?

No. CostDog is read-only โ€” it only reads log files, never modifies them. It runs a lightweight scan every 30 seconds.

How do I install it?

macOS: download the .dmg from GitHub Releases. Windows: download the .exe installer. Both are lightweight and install in seconds.

Can I set a budget limit?

You can configure daily cost alerts today. Hard budget limits with automatic cutoffs are planned for a future release.

Does it support GPT-4, Gemini, and other models?

Currently focused on models used through Claude Code and Codex. Direct API cost tracking for OpenAI, Google, and other providers is on the roadmap.

Is it open source?

Yes. MIT licensed. Star us on GitHub at github.com/bruce-hmz/costdog.
